You can nominate an individual or community group for a Murrindindi Shire Citizen of the Year Award by completing an online nomination form here, or by dropping in to our Library and Customer Service Centres in Alexandra, Yea or Kinglake, as well as the Mobile Library, to complete a paper nomination form.

Council must receive all nominations by Sunday 2 April 2023. You can either submit your nomination online, by completing a paper nomination form and providing it to our Library and Customer Service team, or by posting a paper nomination form to:

When completing the nomination form, you’ll be asked a range of questions about your nominee and your nomination must demonstrate how your nominee has contributed to the Murrindindi Shire community. You’ll also be asked to provide a referee who can support your nomination and any supporting documentation

This year’s categories are:

• Murrindindi Shire Citizen of the Year
• Murrindindi Shire Senior Citizen of the Year
• Murrindindi Shire Young Citizen of the Year
• Community Group of the Year

These Awards provide the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the commitment and contribution of people and community groups that help make a difference to the lives of our residents and local community.

To be eligible for a Citizen of the Year nomination, the nominee must be a resident of Murrindindi Shire and be 26 to 64 years of age on 15 May 2023 (the commencement of National Volunteers Week).

To be eligible for a Senior Citizen of the Year nomination, the nominee must be a resident of Murrindindi Shire and 65 years of age or older on 15 May 2023 (the commencement of National Volunteers Week).

To be eligible for a Young Citizen of the Year nomination, the nominee must be a resident of Murrindindi Shire and be 25 years or younger on 15 May 2023 (the commencement of National Volunteers Week).

To be eligible for a Community Group of the Year nomination, a community group or organisation must be not-for-profit and operating in Murrindindi Shire. A community group can be nominated for its usual activities or for a special project it has completed.

Entries will be judged from 11 April by the judging panel made up of community representatives, facilitated by Murrindindi Shire Mayor John Walsh.

The decision of the Murrindindi Shire Citizen Awards Selection Panel is final and no correspondence will be entered into in respect of that decision.

The Awards will be announced and presented at Council-led events during National Volunteer Week (15-21 May 2023).

The nominations we receive for the Awards, over recent years, are overwhelmingly for significant voluntary contributions that community members have made. This is why we are hosting the Citizen of the Year Awards during National Volunteer Week and providing an opportunity for everyone to celebrate and recognise the work of our volunteers.

Previous unsuccessful nominations may be resubmitted, providing they are updated and entered on the required form.

In the absence of nominations from members of the public, the selection panel may make its own nominations based on local knowledge, experience and/or previous nominations.
