International Women's Day is the perfect time to talk about gender equality with your friends, coworkers and family.

Here are a few conversations starters to kick off the discussion

GENERAL

  • What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
  • What do you believe needs to happen to achieve gender equity in Australia?
  • How can you/your community help keep women safe in their homes?
  • Does your community have crisis support services, and are these readily available?

HOUSE-FOCUSED

  • How many hours a week do you spend on housework?
  • Does everyone in your household do the same amount as you?
  • Would you rather a month off indoor housework (mopping, vacuuming, dishwashing) or outdoor housework (mowing, yardwork)?

FINANCE-FOCUSED

  • How do you split the finances and manage expenses in your household?
  • Are you satisfied with how much money you make every year?
  • Did you negotiate for your last pay rise?

WORKPLACE-FOCUSED

  • What can you do to promote women’s safety in the workplace?
  • Is there an equal balance of leadership and board positions held by women? If not, why not?
  • Does your workplace have policies in place such as Family and Domestic Violence Leave, and where can these be accessed?
  • What qualities do you like in a manager? Are they traditionally more feminine or masculine qualities?
  • Would you rather a week off housework, or a week off employed work?
