Council, together with the Department of Transport and Planning, is reviewing the speed zone of High Street, Yea.

We are proposing the speed zone be reduced from 50 to 40 km per hour, from where the central median starts at the eastern and western end of High Street, Yea (Goulburn Valley Highway).

This review follows a request made to Council by local residents to further improve the safety of High Street. Council is inviting feedback from the community on the proposed speed zone change.

Council is proposing a speed zone reduction on High Street, following concerns raised by local community members.

High Street supports the central hub of the Yea township. On this street, we have:

  • pedestrians moving across the road
  • traffic turning, entering and reversing from the parking bays
  • through traffic travelling along the Goulburn Valley Highway (passing through High Street to another destination)

These different activities increase the risk of an accident occurring. By reducing the speed zone from 50 to 40 km per hour, it will create a safer environment for motorists and pedestrians.

Reducing speed allows drivers more time to react and avoid accidents. Studies have shown that the risk of pedestrian death, when hit by a vehicle, reduces by 60% with a speed reduction from 50 to 40 km per hour.

Council officers are reviewing the speed zone along High Street, Yea, following concerns raised by community members to Council.
There will be minimal impact to travel times for through-traffic travelling on the Goulburn Valley Highway. Based on the speed reduction from 50 to 40 km per hour, the estimated increase in travel time along High Street, Yea, under usual circumstances, is only 14.5 seconds.

After considering community feedback as well as safety implications, Council may decide to proceed with reducing the speed zone on High Street, Yea from 50 – 40 km per hour. To do so, we will need to apply to the Department of Transport and Planning (DoTP) for review and approval before the speed zone is changed.

Council will first consider community feedback before any decision is made on the proposed speed zone reduction. We will also consult with the Department of Transport and Planning (DoTP) and Victoria Police.

If the decision is made to reduce the speed zone on High Street, Yea it could take up to four months before signage is installed and the changes come into effect.

Council has not yet made a decision to reduce the speed zone on High Street, Yea.

As part of the review process, Council will consider all feedback from the community, as well as the safety implications before making a decision.
