Tell us a little about where you volunteer?

  • Radio Murrindindi - UGFM - Kinglake Ranges
  • Kinglake West CFA
  • also a member of Inner Wheel Kinglake Ranges
  • Area Co-Ordinator for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal for Kinglake Ranges.

How did you get into volunteering?

  • CFA - Moved to the area many years ago and had grown up with CFA volunteers in my family, father, brother and my partner
  • Radio - discovered Kinglake Ranges Radio by being introduced by a friend, my other half found UGFM and spoke to the President which then found the studio being established here in the Kinglake Ranges.
  • Good Friday Appeal - after a request from a friend who wanted Kinglake and surrounds on the Regional Board of the Appeal and with a couple of other people got this happening. We have just recently managed to now have it as Kinglake Ranges on the board so to make sure Kinglake West and Pheasant Creek which are part of the area are included in this.
  • Inner Wheel - asked by a friend to come and have a look and this is a 'service club'.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

The ability to help and support community. I have also made new friends through these organisations, and this is nice as we all have similar outlooks and the feeling of acceptance no matter who I am

Is there anything you find challenging about volunteering?

Time restraints - I also work full time (38 hrs a week) off the hill (Suburb of Melbourne), so I find that I have very limited time to share.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?

  • Check what time you have to spare and look for something that YOU enjoy.
  • Do it with the idea of helping someone else, not to pat yourself on the back, you will get reward just by doing - which is for me more than enough
  • There is enough 'me' attitude around that doesn't fit volunteering, it's not about you it's about the community.
